Editor’s note: As companies begin to re-open their offices,a recent article from Bloomberg reports that while some employers are trying to get people back in the workplace, many employees are refusing to leave behind the flexibility and productivity that come with remote work life.

Below is a note from Snyk CEO Peter McKay about Snyk’s philosophy on work flexibility, originally shared in his LinkedIn post.

Are you upset at being forced to return back to the office?

Over the course of the pandemic, many employers have learned that flexibility has become a non-negotiable going forward. At Snyk, as hard as the pandemic has been on all of us, we have learned that time-and-space flexibility has become a normalized way of life for us going forward.

We will continue to maintain our office spaces — they continue to be strongly valued by our employees for the role they play as workspaces, collaboration centers, and social zones.

But we will no longer expect employees to work from offices every day, instead preferring to offer our employees flexibility in lifestyle and schedule.

We encourage our employees to come in to reconnect and re-engage with other Snykers locally, and we organize social opportunities to help facilitate this. But if there's anything the pandemic has taught us, it's that daily physical presence in an office is not a requirement, or even an amplifier, to our ability to do our best work.

Digital and virtual collaboration has expedited productivity in so many ways and equally importantly has democratized meetings and voices to lead to a more inclusive and equal environment.

Do you want to find a place where you can do your best work? We've found that the biggest influencers for motivation and productivity have been:

  1. Do employees have the flexibility to craft the work/life balance that best suits their specific needs?

  2. Are employees extended trust and autonomy, to do their jobs well and be measured against outcomes?

  3. Are we intentional about what is better done in person vs digitally (there are clearly advantages to each)?

Some business leaders have stated overtly that employees who choose to work from home are less motivated than those who choose to come into the office. I categorically disagree.

A motivated and productive employee knows best where they can produce their best work, and we should be in the business of facilitating this. It's an agreement of trust. Trust until proven otherwise.

Snyk's mission is based on empowering developers to do their best work, faster. This applies to all our employees, and we believe that the flexibility and autonomy we offer represents a great recruiting opportunity for us.

We value who you are more than we value where you live. Don't be forced back into an office if that no longer works for you. Come join our team. We would love to have you.
