Snyk expands into Asia Pacific Japan

Peter McKay CEO
Peter McKayMarch 11, 2021

At the beginning of 2021, I noted that Snyk was ready to soar. And soar we have…the rocket ship’s next stop? Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ).

I would like to welcome Shaun McLagan, our new Vice President of APJ Sales, and our new partners Temasek, an investment company headquartered in Singapore, and Geodesic Capital, a venture capital firm that specializes in helping technology companies expand into Asia, to the Snyk family. As announced earlier, Temasek and Geodesic have participated in our Series E investment, and their investment will help fuel our growth across Asia Pacific and Japan.

Since our founding in 2015, with our developer-first, bottom-up approach to security, more than 2.2 million developers and 700 customers across the world have adopted Snyk’s industry leading Cloud Native Application Security Platform and Open Source Vulnerability Database, including APJ customers such as Atlassian, Australia Post, Skyscanner, Telstra and Volt.

Asia Pacific Leads the Way in Digital Transformation

A study from Ernst and Young last year found that in the next two years, 87% of companies across the Asia Pacific region will be well advanced on their digital transformation journeys, with many ahead of their counterparts in Europe and the Americas.

On the surface this is fantastic. But, as digital transformation initiatives explode, legacy applications and infrastructure are being retooled to work in hybrid and cloud environments and developers are building new cloud native applications using open source, containers and APIs.  With all of these changes, releases have moved from a few times a year to multiple times a day, and the industry is now seeing a resulting greater need for security.

Security in Transformation: A Developer-First Approach

Organizations across Asia Pacific are coming to realize that there is an urgent need for a new approach – developer-first security – that enables businesses to continuously build security into their DevOps process and culture. Or, as one IDC Asia Pacific research analyst stated in a recent report, “Enterprises are coming to realize that they ignore DevSecOps at their peril.”

Snyk’s developer-first security approach and the Snyk Cloud Native Application Security Platform supports and integrates into the technologies that developers use to build cloud native applications, including their open source code, containers, infrastructure as code and more. By automating finding, prioritizing and fixing vulnerabilities, Snyk helps developers and their organizations mitigate risk and increase business efficiency.

Welcome, Temasek, Geodesic and Shaun McLagan!

With an estimated 27 million software developers worldwide today, and the strongest growth for developers expected in Asia Pacific specifically, Snyk collectively recognizes that there has never been a better time to serve this market.

Partnering with investors such as Temasek will further fuel our growth across Asia and beyond. Temasek is focused on investing in companies that develop innovative solutions to transform old business models or create new ones. With a global portfolio of over $200 billion, Temasek provides connectivity and insights across a broad spectrum of industries including financial services, telecommunications, media & technology, life sciences and agribusiness.

Started by John V. Roos, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan,  and Ashvin Bachireddy,  former Andreesen Horowitz growth stage partner, Geodesic Capital has a long history of helping companies expand into Japan. We are excited to partner with Geodesic as we recognize that to be successful in Japan, we need a partner with extensive in-country expertise and relationships with the country’s fast growing startups and multinational companies.

I am also thrilled to announce that Shaun McLagan has joined us to lead our APJ go-to-market efforts. As Vice President of APJ Sales, Shaun will lead our direct sales and channel business as well as help us build out dedicated teams in Australia, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and Singapore in the year ahead.

“I am honored to be a part of Snyk’s journey in advancing the global developer-first security movement,” said McLagan. “There is tremendous opportunity in APJ and I look forward to shaping great teams, growing our ecosystem and supporting more developers in more places as the next chapter in security is embraced in APJ.”
